April 14, 2002 - NCSJ today condemned a violent Saturday evening attack on the historic Brodsky Synagogue in Kyiv, Ukraine. “NCSJ condemns this brutal attack by anti-Jewish and anti-Israel extremists, and appreciates the timely response of the Ukrainian and Kyiv authorities.”

The attack, which occurred at approximately 9:30 pm last night, was perpetrated by 40-50 youth who marched through the streets of Kyiv for two miles before reaching the synagogue in the Ukrainian capital. In addition to smashing synagogue windows with rocks and shouting such slogans as “Kill the Jews” and “Heil Hitler”, groups of youths beat at least two victims - the Head of the Lubavitch Yeshiva (seminary), and the son of Kyiv Chief Rabbi Moshe Asman.

Based on the organized and extended nature of the rampage, community leaders in Kyiv have expressed no doubt that the attack was premeditated anti-Semitism. NCSJ joined community leaders in appreciating the public response of authorities, including police and political leaders, which has already led to eight arrests in the attack. “NCSJ and the American Jewish community stand together with our brethren in Ukraine.”

NCSJ has been in contact with leaders of the Ukrainian and Kyiv Jewish communities, including Rabbi Asman. NCSJ leadership, including Chairman Harold Paul Luks, President Robert J. Meth and Executive Director Mark B. Levin, are available for further comment.
