Arson Suspected in Synagogue Fire

The Federation of Jewish Communities on 17 August said that a fire that destroyed the synagogue in Ryazan the previous day was started deliberately, AP reported.  The federation said that local fire fighters have confirmed that conclusion.  It also denounced the fire as "A reprehensible act of anti-Semitism."

The leader of the local Jewish community says he suspects arson in a fire that damaged a synagogue in a Russian town south of Moscow.

Leonid Reznikov told Reuters that the fire in Ryazan's only synagogue had started early August 16 and gutted most of the ground floor.
