We are pleased to present the 2003-04 NCSJ Country Reports for the successor states of the former Soviet Union (FSU). The Jewish communities in the successor states comprise the third-largest concentration of Jews, following the United States and Israel.
This report is the product of ongoing monitoring and analysis of developments by NCSJ’s resident team of researchers and interns. The Report reflects NCSJ’s consultations with a network of contacts throughout the FSU that include government officials, Jewish communal leaders, and representatives of humanitarian organizations.
The NCSJ Reports address a distinct set of issues in each successor state. Our goal is to provide facts and analysis on the current political, economic, societal and communal issues affecting Jews in each of the successor states. Although the NCSJ Country Reports follow the format of previous editions, the text is new. Each Country Report features a summary page and has been organized with subheadings to facilitate your review of key issues. Jewish population figures are estimates based on information from multiple sources.
We trust that you will find this to be a valuable reference tool – objective, timely, and accessible to policymakers, community leadership, students, and others interested in the changes affecting the FSU and their effect on the West.
Updated and detailed information on the FSU, including the individual Country Reports and Country Pages, is available through the NCSJ Web site at
www.ncsj.org. We invite your inquiries and comments.
