Dear Friend,

It is easy for us, as Americans, to take religious freedoms and political rights for granted. However, in the countries of the post-Soviet Union, the traditions of justice and rights are still barely rooted in the political soil. There, the forces of oppression are easily aroused when the economy suffers, jobs are lost and assets lose their value. Now, in this time of international economic turmoil, we must be especially vigilant.

The Jews of the post-Soviet region are not fully free from prejudice and strife. Recently, anti-Semitic incidents have also been exacerbated by the harsh impact of the global economic crisis and the rise in ultra-nationalism among disaffected youth.

The most common expression of anti-Semitism in the region remains attacks on property, especially vandalism of synagogues and other communal buildings, cemeteries, and Holocaust sites, as well as the distribution of anti-Semitic materials in print and online.

We write to you today to let you know how you can help NCSJ safeguard the religious and political freedoms of the 1.5 million Jews in the former Soviet Union. Their fledgling communities have come back to life on the very soil where our own Ashkenazi families are rooted, and we must not let them down.

Through NCSJ, you see firsthand the impact of our more than 30-year advocacy efforts on behalf of our Jewish brothers and sisters living in the former Soviet Union. We helped one million Soviet Jews to emigrate, and we helped weaken the monolithic Soviet empire. When the USSR finally fell apart in 1991 - and a significant number of the region's Jewish populations determined to remain and rebuild communal life in their native countries - the demand for NCSJ's advocacy became ever more crucial.

In the last 20 years, we have contributed to the growth of new Jewish communities throughout the 15 successor states and have worked closely with their national governments to respect the autonomy of these fledgling communities. As they continue to need us, we continue to need your help to strengthen the Jewish communities who seek our protection and partnership.

We hope, with your help, to say "L'Dor v'Dor" to the hundreds of Jewish communities in the post-Soviet region. Please consider supporting the religious and cultural celebrations that are able to be conducted in restored synagogues and newly-built community centers, as well as in privacy of people's homes. Please make a gift today.

Every contribution makes a difference and sends a message to the next generation, that we will always answer the call when the security and liberties of hundreds of thousands of Jewish lives are under threat.

Thank you for your generous and critically-needed support. With your help, we look forward to continuing to build and strengthen our Jewish future.
